Life science and SDGs
While science and technology have made remarkable progress in regenerative medicine, food production, and space exploration, humanity must also overcome new challenges, such as environmental and energy issues and countermeasures against infectious diseases. There are many problems that cannot be solved by approaches from specific sciences or research fields alone. Life science" is a large fusion science encompassing diverse research fields ranging from basic science to applied development, and it continues to develop rapidly in a wide range of research fields, such as materials integrating bio- and nano-science and countermeasures against infectious diseases.
Hokkaido University established Faculty of Advanced Life Science as a cross-departmental research organization and Graduate School of Life Science as an educational organization in 2006; in 2016, to achieve the 150 Vision of Hokkaido University's Near Future Strategy, the University initiated a world-class international research center for soft matter, promoting advanced research that will contribute to the development of new areas of life science and the building of a sustainable society The center is promoting advanced research that contributes to the development of new areas of life science and the building of a sustainable society.
In undergraduate education, the department is responsible for School of Science Department of Biological Sciences (Macromolecular Functional Science), and in graduate education, the department is responsible for Graduate School of Life Science Department of Life Sciences (Integrated Life Sciences Course) and Department of Soft Matter, and is in charge of education and research guidance on next-generation life science research themes such as materials science, data science, genome technology, and active matter. The faculty members are in charge of education and research guidance on next-generation life science research themes such as materials science, data science, genome technology, and active matter. The faculty members in charge aim to educate students to become creators of a sustainable society through research seeds and other initiatives related to SDG goals 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 12, 14, and 17 in particular.
