THE Sustainability Impact Rating
The Sustainability Impact Ratings is an international evaluation system developed by the British higher education magazine Times Higher Education (THE) that assesses universities' social contribution within the framework of the SDGs. It was launched in 2019 as the Impact Rankings and renamed the Sustainability Impact Ratings in 2026.
Ranked 7th in the world (1st in Japan for 7 consecutive years)
In the "THE Sustainability Impact Rating 2026," Hokkaido University ranked 7th globally and 1st in Japan for the seventh consecutive year, out of 1,603 universities worldwide that were included in the overall ranking.
In the rankings by SDG, "SDG2 Zero Hunger" received a high ranking, coming in second place out of 731 universities worldwide. Additionally, "SDG9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure" (36th globally), "SDG11 Sustainable Cities and Communities" (41st globally), "SDG14 Life Below Water" (21st globally), "SDG15 Life on Land" (18th globally), "SDG16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions" (21st globally), and "SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals" (31st globally) all rankedwithin the top 100 globally. SDG15 was ranked first domestically for the fifth consecutive year, and SDG2, SDG14, SDG16, and SDG17 all ranked first domestically for the second consecutive year. Furthermore, we ranked first in Japan, alongside other universities, in both "SDG7 Affordable and Clean Energy" and "SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production."

Hokkaido University ranked 7th in the world in “THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026”
Times Higher Education, a UK-based higher education magazine, announced the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 on June 24, 2026. THE Sustainability Impact Ratings assess universities’ contributions to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), evaluating participating institutions based on submitted data and external sources. THE Impact Rankings were launched in 2019, and it was renamed THE Sustainability Impact Ratings this year.
Hokkaido University is ranked 7th in the world and has been first in Japan for the seventh consecutive year, out of the 1,603 universities included in the overall ranking.
Of the 17 SDG targets, Hokkaido University received a particularly high recognition for SDG 2: Zero Hunger, ranking 2nd out of 731 universities worldwide. In addition, the university was ranked within the global top 100 in the following categories: SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (36th); SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities (41st); SDG 14: Life Below Water (21st); SDG 15: Life on Land (18th); SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (21st); SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (31st). “SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy” and “SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.”
