New content is now available on the special website “Fish of the Month (FoM)*” of the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University.

The Faculty of Fisheries Sciences of Hokkaido University continues to lead research into squid ecology. Currently, Assistant Professor Jun Yamamoto, a member of the FSC, Hokkaido University, is developing the next generation of research into squid ecology, not only through fieldwork but also by utilizing the large experimental tanks at the Hakodate Research Center for Fisheries and Oceans. Squid are more sensitive than might be expected and so are difficult to keep in captivity, but as you can see in the above welcome photo, breeding experiments in the large tank are being carried out with great enthusiasm. They are beginning to obtain positive results by applying various original innovations. They have also been studying mass egg formation and subsequent hatching of squid for some time, and have gained various new insights into squid. A photo of baby squid has also been provided.
