Hokkaido University's School of Agriculture, Graduate School of Agriculture, and Research Faculty of Agriculture will hold the 75th Clock Tower Salon: Ask School of Agriculture on December 17th.
The Hokkaido University School of Agriculture, Graduate School of Agriculture, and Research Faculty of Agriculture are holding the Clock Tower Salon "Ask School of Agriculture" at the Sapporo Clock Tower (official name: Former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall).
The theme of the 75th conference is "The Contribution of Chemistry to Agriculture, Food, and Living." Our lives would be impossible without chemistry (substances). Everything around us is composed of chemistry (substances), enriching our lives and supporting our everyday comfort. However, at the same time, chemicals have the potential to cause environmental pollution and health problems, so we must deal with them appropriately. The first lecture will discuss chemistry, a subject that is often avoided within science classes because it deals with invisible scales. However, if we think of compounds as tiny structures, the world of molecules can be intuitively understood. Using examples such as herbicides, plant toxins, and natural fibers, the lecture will explain how the "shape" of compounds is linked to visible phenomena. The second lecture will discuss the development of a luminescent material that can efficiently convert sunlight's ultraviolet light into red light, and its applications, including experiments in which the conversion of sunlight's ultraviolet light into red light promotes the growth of vegetables and trees, and security inks that take advantage of the invisibility of ultraviolet light.
