The Sericulture Room of the Biological Production Research Farm Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, Hokkaido University, is recruiting volunteers (unpaid) to raise silkworms and silk moths.

In the sericulture room, we maintain about 30 varieties of silkworms (original species) and two strains of the Yamamayuga silkworm. Among these, some of the oldest varieties have been maintained for over 100 years, dating back to the days of Sapporo Agricultural College. During volunteer activities, you can observe the life cycle of silkworms, from raising them (starting to raise hatched silkworms) to laying silk (spinning silk and making cocoons), mating, and laying eggs, and experience raising various varieties. You can also learn about the various varieties and how to train mulberry trees, as well as harvesting mulberry leaves to feed to the silkworms.
