On Friday, February 28th, a ceremony was held on the Hokkaido University Sapporo campus to sign a memorandum of understanding between Hokkaido University and the Uehiro Foundation for Ethics to establish the "Uehiro Field of Oceanography."
Starting in April 2025, the Uehiro Field of Oceanography will be established as an endowed field in the Department of Marine Bioresource Sciences Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University. The Uehiro Field of Oceanography aims to promote research that contributes to the understanding and conservation of the global environment, which is becoming increasingly warm, through oceanography, as well as to foster human resources who can play an active role on a global scale toward the realization of a sustainable society through practical training centered on fieldwork and exchanges with the Uehiro Center for Oceanography, Department of Oceanography, College of Marine, Earth School of Engineering and Technology, University of Hawaii at Manoa.
