Ranked 72nd in the world in THE Impact Rankings 2024 and 1st in Japan for the fifth consecutive year

THE Impact Rankings

The "THE Impact Rankings" is a ranking by the British higher education magazine "Times Higher Education (THE)," which evaluates universities' social contribution efforts, such as activities against climate change, gender equality, and health and welfare, using the framework of the United Nations' SDGs. This is the sixth time the ranking has been held, and this year 2,152 universities from around the world, including 88 from Japan, participated.

Ranked 72nd in the world (1st in Japan)


In the "THE University Impact Rankings 2024," Hokkaido University was ranked 72nd in the world (1st in Japan) out of 1,963 universities worldwide that were included in the overall ranking.

In the ranking by SDG, out of the 17 SDG goals, "SDG2: Zero Hunger" (89th in the world), "SDG9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure" (49th), "SDG14: Life below water" (57th), "SDG15: Life on land" (51st), and "SDG17: Partnerships for the goals" (52nd) were highly rated, ranking within the top 100 in the world.

Additionally, in 2023, the university was presented with a plaque in recognition of being ranked number one in the country for the fourth consecutive year.

Hokkaido University Ranks 72nd in the World (and 1st in Japan for fifth consecutive year) in “THE Impact Rankings 2024”

Times Higher Education, a UK-based higher education magazine, released THE Impact Rankings 2024 on June 12, 2024. Hokkaido University is ranked 72nd in the world―and 1st in Japan, for the fifth consecutive year―out of the 1,963 universities that targeted the overall ranking. The THE Impact Rankings assess universities' contributions to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Participating universities are evaluated based on submitted data and metrics from external sources.

Out of the 17 SDG targets, Hokkaido University is ranked within the global top 100 in the following categories: SDG 2: Zero Hunger (89th), SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (49th), SDG 14: Life Below Water (57th), SDG 15: Life on Land (51st), SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (52nd).
