Global Energy And Water Exchanges (GEWEX)

The Global Energy And Water Exchanges (GEWEX) is one of the core programmes promoted by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), which is co-funded by the International Science Council (ISC), the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO). With the aim of promoting understanding of water and energy circulation processes on the Earth's surface, underground, and atmosphere, we collect scientific information that contributes to global climate prediction through research and observation projects, and promote research in these fields. The aim is to provide a platform for research, and several researchers from Japanese research institutions are involved in its operation as panel members.

“The 9th GEWEX-OSC (2024 Sapporo)”

“The 9th GEWEX-OSC (2024 Sapporo)” is the most important international conference organised by GEWEX to study the effects of global climate change on water and energy circulation. The first conference was held in the UK in 1994 and has been held every two to five years in different parts of the world until the 8th Canadian conference in 2018. The 9th conference will be held in Japan (Sapporo City) from July 8th to 12th, 2024. This is the first time that it will be held in Japan, and Hokkaido University is a co-sponsor of the conference. In addition, Professor Tomohito Yamada Faculty of Engineering and others are serving as members of the Sapporo executive committee.

The formulation of mitigation and adaptation measures for the problem of global warming and the prediction of future climate change are urgent issues that must be addressed throughout the world. This international conference will bring together international experts in this field from all over the world to share and discuss the latest research results and initiatives on the behaviour of energy and water circulations at global and regional scales.
