Hokkaido University Diversity and Inclusion Promotion Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as DEI Promotion Headquarters) and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine FD Committee will hold an on-campus FD/SD seminar ``Understanding Unconscious Bias'' on July 14th.

The DEI Promotion Headquarters is implementing a program to support efforts by departments to promote diversity and inclusion. This seminar will be held as part of this program.

Everyone has unconscious bias (distortions and biases in the way they see and perceive things that they are not aware of), but inappropriate words and actions that occur unconsciously can have a negative impact on students' academic and career paths. It also influences decisions and the promotion of diversity among faculty and staff. In this FD/SD seminar, we will invite Professor Hideya Kitamura of the Department of Social Psychology, Toyo University, who is familiar with unconscious bias and has many related books and lecture experience, to give lectures on the background and principles, psychological science tests, group discussions, etc. Through this, we will look at our own unconscious biases and think about how to deal with them.
