The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University, will be holding a science experiment workshop titled "What Happens Inside Communication Cables? – Exploring How Information is Transmitted Through Mathematics."
We exchange a large amount of information reliably every day through communication cables.
If you magnify the inside of a cable to a very small scale, you'll see that the particles are moving around randomly.
So, how does this random movement result in a stable signal flow?
Let's use diagrams and simulations to experience how mathematics unravels this mechanism.
【overview】
- Date and Time: Sunday, December 6, 2026, from 13:00 to 16:30
- Venue: Hokkaido University School of Science Building 4, Room 4-501 (Kita 10-jo Nishi 8-chome, Kita-ku, Sapporo)
- Target audience: Junior high school students (15 participants), and their chaperones. *One chaperone per student is allowed to attend the course. Junior high school students can also participate alone.
- Lecturer: Travis Scrimscher (Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University)
- Items to bring: writing utensils
- Application deadline: November 24, 2026 (Tuesday). If there are many applicants, a lottery will be held.
* Regarding chaperones: This refers to parents (family members) or teachers from the student's junior high school. For example... a mother who is actually good at math, a grandfather who used to dislike math but is now thinking of learning it again as a hobby in his later years, a high school student who is actually planning to use math as an advantage to take the entrance exam for Hokkaido University, a junior high school teacher who is actually looking for material to use in math class... we welcome everyone.
