The Center for Applied Ethics and Applied Philosophy, Graduate Faculty of Humanities and Human Sciences, Hokkaido University, will hold a public symposium entitled "Science Education and Women."
In Japan, the proportion of female students studying science and engineering fields, as well as female researchers in science and engineering fields, is extremely low.
In recent years, various initiatives have been undertaken to increase the number of female students and researchers in science and engineering fields, but the results have not been as promising as hoped.
However, it's not as if there were absolutely no female students or researchers in science and engineering fields before or during the war.
Hokkaido University also has a history of accepting female students in its School of Science and School of Agriculture during its time as an imperial university. Furthermore, during World War II, there were attempts to increase the number of female students studying in science and engineering fields in order to address the shortage of scientific and technological personnel.
In this symposium, we would like to consider the relationship between science education and women, taking into account the history of modern Japan.
