The land on which Hokkaido University stands was the site where the Ainu, the indigenous people, lived and made their living for a long time.
Hokkaido University has expressed its deep respect for the long history and cultural ties that the Ainu people have had in this region, and has published "A Statement of Respect for the Indigenous Peoples of the Hokkaido University Location (Full Version/Summary Version)" in order to pass on the history to future generations.
In addition, following the announcement, a plaque bearing this expression of respect, inscribed in Japanese, Ainu (Ishikari River dialect), and English, has been installed on the Sapporo campus.
Hokkaido University, through its "Expression of Respect for the Indigenous Peoples of the Hokkaido University Location," promotes understanding and passing on the history and present of the Ainu people, the indigenous people of this land, to members who do not have Ainu roots. Through this, the university aims to create a safe and secure environment for learning and working, where both members with Ainu roots and other members can feel secure. Furthermore, the university will extend these ideas and actions from the university to society, striving to create a harmonious society where people with Ainu roots and others can live together in peace.
