The Hokkaido University Institute of Low Temperature Science will hold the 2024 Institute of Low Temperature Science Joint Research Conference "Towards research on material circulation connecting marginal seas" on May 24th.
The oceans around Japan, including the western North Pacific, have high biological productivity and are among the world's richest in marine resources. This bounty is thought to be due to the close relationship between ocean circulation and the circulation of nutrients, which involves marginal seas such as the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the East China Sea, and the Kuroshio and Oyashio Currents that connect them. However, there is little quantitative evidence from observations of the material circulation that connects the marginal seas, so we will develop an observation plan that uses the latest precise chemical analysis techniques in the marginal seas and ocean currents around Japan, with a view to connecting the areas surrounding Japan.
