UArctic (the University of the Arctic), a network of educational and research institutions to which Hokkaido University is a member, is calling for students for the "Circumpolar Studies Online Course" to be offered from May to July 2024.


The Circumpolar Studies Online Course is an undergraduate online course on the Arctic offered by UArctic member universities through an online education system. There is no cost. The course is taught in English.

Summer Semester: May – July, 2024
  • Courses:
    1.    CS 100: Introduction to the Circumpolar World
      June 17 – July 30, 2024
    2.    GEOG 2811H: The International Arctic: Environment, Diplomacy, and Geopolitics
      May 2 – June 16, 2024
  • Target: All students (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Course fee: Free
  • Language: English (ability to understand lectures and discussion)
How to apply

Please submit the following by 17:00 on March 25 by e-mail to the International Affairs Department, Hokkaido University (e-mail:

  1. Online Course Registration Form(Word)
    Complete the form in English.
    Send a PDF file of the form with your signature in the “STUDENT SIGNATURE (Required)” field and the date in the “Date” field.
  2. Proof of English proficiency (TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.), for the applicants whose first language is not English.
  3. When submitting the above documents, please include your name (in Kanji characters, if applicable), affiliation, grade, and student number in the body of the email.
