UArctic (the University of the Arctic), a network of educational and research institutions to which Hokkaido University is a member, is calling for additional students to take the "Circumpolar Studies Online Course" that will begin in January 2024.

 

The Circumpolar Studies Online Course is an undergraduate online course on the Arctic offered by UArctic member universities through an online education system. There is no cost. The course is taught in English.

Winter Semester: January – April 2024
  • Courses
    •         CS 100: Introduction to the Circumpolar World
    •     CS 312: Land and Environment of the Circumpolar World II
    •     CS 322: Peoples and Cultures of the Circumpolar World II
    •     CS 332: Contemporary Issues of the Circumpolar World II
    •         CAST 3241H: Histories of the Canadian North
    • CS 400: Arctic Environmental Security
      * CS 100 is the prerequisite for CS 322 and 332, and CS 100 and CS 311 are the prerequisites for CS 312. Credits cannot be transferred.
      * CAST 3241H and CS 400 have been added since the last call, and these are the courses recommended for upper-year students.
      * Courses will be taught asynchronously, however, CS 400 will be taught synchronously by online on Mondays & Wednesdays at 12:30 pm EST.
  • Period: January – April 2024
  • Target: All students (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Course fee: Free
  • Language: English (ability to understand lectures and discussion)

How to apply

Please send the following documents by email to the Division of International Relations (email: global@oia.hokudai.ac.jp, to the International Collaboration Officer) by 17:00 on November 24th.

  1. Online Course Registration Form(Word)
    Complete the form in English.
    Send a PDF file of the form with your signature in the “STUDENT SIGNATURE (Required)” field and the date in the “Date” field.
  2. Proof of English proficiency (TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.), for the applicants whose first language is not English.
  3. When submitting the above documents, please include your name (in Kanji characters, if applicable), affiliation, grade, and student number in the body of the email.
