Our university's Institute of Low Temperature Science will be holding the 2025 public lecture, "The Expanding Appeal of Low Temperatures - The Front Lines of Low Temperature Science", every Monday from October 2nd to November 13th.

Our University's Institute of Low Temperature Science was established in 1941 as Hokkaido University's first affiliated research institute. Since then, it has developed into a unique research institute that focuses not only on glaciology but also on various natural phenomena related to low temperatures and the cryosphere, and in 1995 it was reorganized as a national joint research institute. One of the most important roles of university-affiliated research institutes is to produce unique research with a long-term perspective that can only be done at universities. In view of the importance of the cryosphere in the global environmental system, Institute of Low Temperature Science conducts a variety of field research in cold land and sea areas around the world, including the Rim of Okhotsk region adjacent to Hokkaido, the Antarctic, and the Arctic. and has achieved great results. In addition, we approach various unique phenomena that appear in low-temperature environments from the viewpoint of basic science such as physics, chemistry, geochemistry, and biology, and have produced many original and advanced research results.

This public lecture will cover the front lines of these Institute of Low Temperature Science.
