The livestock barn and grain warehouse of the “Sapporo Agricultural College Farm No. 2,” an important cultural property of Hokkaido University, will be open to the public from May 8 to November 4, 2023.

Sapporo Agricultural College (current Hokkaido University) was established in 1876. Around the same time, a large farm was opened under the leadership of W. S. Clark, creating a hub for integrating modern large-scale agriculture, including livestock, which the residents of Hokkaido had no experience of. These farm facilities were built in the “balloon frame” style, practical with a light wooden frame, and were popular in the Midwestern United States. The model barn was intended to promote dairy farming, in accordance with Hokkaido’s climate.
