Our university will participate in the "30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity" in June 2022.

Hokkaido University is the first national university to participate in the 30by30 Alliance.

Our university owns vast research forests and campuses mainly in Hokkaido, and has long been involved in research (intellectual assets) and conservation and management (physical assets). In addition, our university has a vision of ``Hokkaido University contributing to solving the world's problems.'' From the perspective of promoting and accelerating education, research, social collaboration and the construction of a sustainable campus that contributes to the construction of a sustainable society, this bookThrough participation in the alliance, we will work to conserve biodiversity and realize a sustainable society.

What is 30by30?

30by30 (Thirty by Thirty) is the goal of halting and restoring biodiversity loss (nature positive) by 2030, and aims to ensure that at least 30% of land and oceans are covered by healthy ecosystems by 2030. This is an international goal that aims to effectively conserve water. At the G7 Summit held in the UK in June 2021, the 2030 Nature Compact was agreed upon, with each G7 country pledging to conserve and protect at least the same proportion of the world's natural resources in order to achieve the goal. It was discussed at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) held in October 2021, and is expected to be adopted at the second part of COP15, which is scheduled to be held in the future.

Domestic initiatives: 30by30 Roadmap/30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity

In order to achieve the 30 by 30 goal, which is an international commitment, domestically, the National Biodiversity Strategy Ministries and Agencies Liaison Council is formulating the 30 by 30 Roadmap, which summarizes major initiatives such as OECM*1 certification. In addition, the `` 30 by 30 Alliance for Biodiversity'' will be established in April 2022 as a coalition of volunteers (17 initiators) including the Ministry of the Environment, governments, businesses, and NPOs, with the aim of building a system to achieve 30 by 30 domestically. Established on the 8th of May.

*1. OECM (Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures)

Areas that contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, other than protected areas such as national parks. Areas that are being conserved through private-sector initiatives and areas where management that is not primarily aimed at conservation also contributes to protecting the natural environment.
