Hokkaido University, in collaboration with the National Institute of Polar Research and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), has launched the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability 3 (ArCS-3). ArCS-3, the largest comprehensive Arctic research project in Japan, is currently recruiting participants for its "Lake Saroma Ice Training" program.

At Lake Saroma, located on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, students will learn about the biogeochemical and physical properties of snow, sea ice, and the ocean, as well as their relationship to marine ecosystems, through practical training on the ice, processing and analysis of acquired samples, data analysis, and final presentations.

We aim to provide a practical learning and experience environment for conducting polar research, such as in the Arctic, and to lay the foundation for independent research.
