Hokkaido University Museum will host its 8th Saturday Citizen Seminar for the 2026 academic year, titled "Boys, Be Ambitious! 150 Years."

Sapporo Agricultural College was founded through the encounter of two ambitious men: Kiyotaka Kuroda and Dr. Clark. Establishing a modern institution of higher education in Hokkaido, then a remote region, was Kuroda's truly ambitious endeavor. And Clark was the man with the courage and determination to take on the role of headmaster in that very place.
Clark sought not merely individuals with knowledge and skills, but those with high ideals, who could think for themselves and live according to their own beliefs. His teachings became the spirit of Sapporo Agricultural College, and it nurtured many individuals who contributed to society.
This lecture will examine the ideas and achievements of Kuroda and Clark, and consider how the spirit inherited at Sapporo Agricultural College influenced subsequent Japanese education and thought. Furthermore, we will explore what the phrase "Boys, Be Ambitious!" poses to us today, 150 years later.
