Please join us for the final presentation of "Global Practical Subjects II" (one of the pre-program subjects in the Nitobe College Graduate Curriculum). This event is being held in conjunction with the 150th anniversary celebration of Hokkaido University.
Mashike Town is a small port town on the Sea of Japan with a population of approximately 3,400. It once prospered from herring fishing and boasts a rich history, a vibrant food culture, and well-preserved townscapes from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. However, it is also facing the challenges of rapid population decline and an aging population. The graduate students tackled the challenge presented by Mashike Town: "How can we revitalize a small community experiencing population decline?"
The students, acting as entrepreneurs in a community development company, conceived business ideas and projects to make Mashike Town a more attractive and vibrant place. Their proposals spanned seven areas: tourism, food and local products, transportation and mobility, education, healthcare and welfare, technology, and international exchange and multicultural coexistence. Each proposal was based on a sustainable and profitable business model.
On June 29, 2026, students conducted fieldwork in Mashike Town. By visiting various locations in the town and engaging in dialogue with local businesses, they are shaping their proposals to be rooted in the town's realities.
In this interactive English session, each team will present their research findings and proposals.
