Faculty of Science at Hokkaido University and the Hokkaido Development Bureau have signed an agreement on cooperation to promote research on earthquakes and volcanic eruptions at the Graduate Faculty of Science. By sharing the knowledge related to mitigating earthquake and volcanic eruption disasters obtained through this research, they will contribute to disaster reduction.
Based on this agreement, we will combine state-of-the-art subsurface structure exploration techniques with fiber optic cables owned by the Hokkaido Development Bureau around active volcanoes. In active volcanoes that repeatedly erupt, such as Mount Usu, we will clarify the subsurface structure of the magma ascent pathways in three dimensions and obtain information that will be useful for volcanic eruption prediction and volcanic activity monitoring, such as the relationship between eruption location and precursory earthquake activity, the characteristics of magma movement pathways, and the location and shape of deep magma. Through these efforts, we aim to mitigate future volcanic eruption disasters.
