The Department of Blood Purification at Hokkaido University Hospital will be conducting awareness activities about chronic kidney disease (CKD) in conjunction with World Kidney Day.
CKD is a disease in which kidney function gradually declines, and it is estimated that there are approximately 13.3 million patients in Japan. This corresponds to approximately one in eight adults, and it has been referred to as a new national disease. CKD has almost no noticeable symptoms in the early stages, but as it progresses, not only does it require dialysis or a kidney transplant, but it also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke.
In this campaign, the Sapporo TV Tower will be lit up in green, the symbolic color of CKD, to raise awareness of CKD among Hokkaido residents and promote the importance of early detection and treatment. The campaign also aims to promote regional cooperation in CKD countermeasures in Hokkaido, and to create a system in which medical institutions, government officials, and citizens work together to protect kidney health.
