Based on a comprehensive partnership agreement with The Hokkaido Shimbun Press, Hokkaido University is hosting the Hokkaido University New Academy as part of its recurrent education program.

At the new Kitadai Do Academy in the first half of 2026, the Graduate Research Faculty of Media and Communication and Faculty of Engineering will be in charge of humanities and science courses, respectively.

 

Humanities: Tourism, media, and local stories woven through words

 

Leaving your everyday life, going to unfamiliar places, and coming into contact with unfamiliar languages and cultures can lead to new discoveries. Such experiences can also lead to a re-examination of our lives. In this humanities course, researchers specializing in tourism and linguistics will introduce and analyze unique case studies to provide an easy-to-understand introduction to discovering, expressing, and communicating local values and cultures.

Science: Frontier Engineering - Technology that opens up uncharted territory

 

The frontiers of technology have always been in places where we face harsh environments. Responding to wind, waves, snow, natural disasters, geopolitical risks, and declining populations—to make these possible, we need an engineering approach based on basic science that actually controls the environment and society. Six researchers from Faculty of Engineering will introduce cutting-edge examples from a variety of perspectives.
