"Bear Research: Looking Back Over 47 Years" - Contents -
My involvement with bears began 47 years ago, when I joined the Hokkaido University Brown Bear Research Group (hereafter referred to as the Bear Lab) shortly after entering Hokkaido University.
The impression I received from my predecessors and seniors working with bears at that time was so strong that I stayed with the bear lab for nine years. After entering School of Veterinary Medicine, I began full-scale research into the reproductive physiology of bears, and since then I have been involved in various surveys and research into the physiology, ecology, and infectious diseases of bears both in Japan and overseas.
As I reach retirement age this March, I will mark a turning point in my research on bears and look back on the past 47 years of research. I would like to share my research results, including the inspirations and failures I experienced along the way.
