From February 19th to 22nd, the Hokkaido University Media and Tourism Research Center will be holding "Capturing the Moment: Travel, Media, and Cultural Heritage 7: China through the Gaze of Others: Beijing and Yunnan in Early 20th Century European Photography - Exhibition and Seminar."

This study group will look at examples of Russian and French photographers who traveled to China in the early 20th century and photographically recorded aspects of society in the capital, Beijing, and in Yunnan in southwestern China around 1902. Beijing and Yunnan have often been spoken of in terms of the relationship between "center" and "periphery," but despite the significant differences in political and economic conditions in the historical context of the late Qing Dynasty, the photographs also reveal cultural and social commonalities, as well as continuities in the lifeworlds that traverse the city and the periphery.

The exhibition will be divided into two parts: an exhibition and a study group. Using photographic materials from France and Russia as a guide, the exhibition will explore how the image of China at the time was created.
