The East Asia Media Studies Center, affiliated with Research Faculty of Media and Communication, Hokkaido University, will hold a lecture entitled "The Frontline of Myanmar News Reporting: Understanding the Background and Results of the General Election" on January 18th.

Myanmar's general election will be held at the end of December 2025. Since the military coup in 2021, many pro-democracy politicians and activists have been arrested, and those who remain have been forced into exile or hiding. In addition, censorship has been imposed across the country, and many people who have criticized the election or the military on social media, as well as those who have simply "liked" such posts, have already been arrested. In this situation, the military-led election will be held.
Criticisms are pouring out from within Myanmar and abroad, questioning the legitimacy of the elections and whether the military's goal is to achieve a token "transition to civilian rule" and impress the international community.

There are few major media outlets in Japan that provide detailed coverage of the situation in Myanmar, making it difficult for individuals to obtain information without actively searching online. Therefore, we have invited Yang Zhiqiang, who is based in Taiwan and has been reporting on the situation in Myanmar. This will be a valuable opportunity to hear about the latest developments in Myanmar, from the current state of the democratization movement to an analysis of the election results.
