Aiming to make Hokkaido University Raspberry® a new Hokkaido specialty, Hokkaido University has collaborated with Bellissimo Co., Ltd. and Sapporo Shunsaido Co., Ltd. to jointly develop the new "Hokkaido University Raspberry Roll Cookie" in the "Hokkaido University Raspberry® Series."
Hokkaido University Raspberry® is a raspberry variety developed by a research group led by Professor Yoichiro Hoshino of Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, Hokkaido University. Raspberries imported from overseas generally have the problem of being difficult to grow in Japan's hot and humid climate, where they are prone to disease and grow tall. The group therefore crossbred wild Hokkaido "brambleberries" with imported "raspberries" to develop raspberries that are easy to grow in Hokkaido and have a good flavor, and aims to use four particularly excellent strains from these as "Hokkaido University Raspberry®."
As Hokkaido University Raspberry® becomes established as a Hokkaido-grown raspberry and spreads to growers, distinctive Hokkaido University Raspberries® tailored to the local environment and cultivation techniques will be produced. This is expected to lead to collaboration between growers and local restaurants, revitalizing the region.
The product will be on sale from Friday, November 7th at the original shop on the Hokkaido University campus and at souvenir shops throughout Hokkaido.
