On October 9th, Institute of Low Temperature Science at Hokkaido University signed a collaboration agreement with the National Institutes of Natural Sciences' Center for Exploration of Life.
The purpose of this agreement is to contribute to the advancement of academic and scientific technology in Japan and around the world, as well as the development of talented personnel, by utilizing the research capabilities and human resources of both parties and promoting collaboration and cooperation.
The National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) ExCELLs (ExCELLs) is a new research organization established in 2018, carrying on the tradition of interdisciplinary research activities established by the Okazaki National Research Institutes (OKIRI), a historic organization based in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. The organization pursues the common question of humanity: "What is life?", promoting academic and scientific research in Japan and around the world, and fostering talented individuals. While there has been previous collaboration with Hokkaido University's Institute of Low Temperature Science on the survival mechanisms of organisms in low temperatures and extreme environments, such as mammalian hibernation research, there are other promising areas of collaboration, including research on the dynamics of water and ice, which are essential for life, the history of the Earth, and molecular evolution in the universe, which is related to the origin of matter and life, as well as unique cutting-edge technologies. This agreement is expected to further promote exchanges between the two organizations.
