The Joint Veterinary Medicine Subcommittee of the Committee on Food Science and Committee on Basic Medical Science of the Science Council of Japan, and the Joint Food Safety Subcommittee of the Committee on Food Science and Committee on Agriculture, will hold a public symposium, "Considering Euthanasia of Animals II," on December 6th, co-sponsored by the Japanese Association of Forensic Veterinary Medicine.

Ethical issues surrounding animals have become a major concern in society today and are becoming more widely recognized. In particular, there has been much discussion about how to relieve animals from unnecessary pain, suffering, and distress through "euthanasia," including the pros and cons of this approach. At this symposium, experts on animal "euthanasia" will share their experiences and opinions on the subject, and we will discuss the scientific basis and methods of euthanasia.
