On Saturday, September 20th, Sapporo City held a wildlife observation event at the Sapporo Campus of Hokkaido University. 27 people living in Sapporo participated in the event.
Despite being located in the heart of the city, the Sapporo Campus is blessed with abundant nature, and one of its distinctive features is not only its beautiful scenery, but also its ecosystem, which is made up of a diverse range of flora and fauna, primarily native species. Of the approximately 178 hectares of the Sapporo Campus, 126 hectares has been designated a "Nature Coexistence Site" by the government (Minister of the Environment, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), where a particularly healthy ecosystem has been preserved.
As interest in biodiversity grows internationally, Sapporo City released its "Biodiversity Sapporo Vision" in March of last year. Sapporo City aims to have five nature-friendly sites certified within the city by 2030, and is also working to raise awareness of these sites. This event was held as part of this initiative, and faculty from Hokkaido University's "Ecological Environment Management Working Group," which brings together experts from the university in fields such as landscaping and ecology, assisted as explainers.
The event will be posted online.
