Faculty of Humanities and Human Sciences at Hokkaido University will be holding a special exhibition at Shoka no Mori entitled "Tobacco Packages that Carve Memories - The World Seen by Golden Kite and Dove" from September 5th to December 26th.
Tobacco is a symbol of each era and a mirror that reflects the state of society. This exhibition focuses on cigarette packaging in particular from the perspectives of war, the symbolism of plants and animals as designs, and memory.
Tobacco is a truly complex entity. While the validity of its existence has come under scrutiny in recent years, it cannot be denied that it has played an important role historically and culturally. It is also true that tobacco is linked to people's memories and recollections, which can include both heartwarming nostalgia and bitter, unpleasant memories. This exhibition does not advocate or criticize smoking. Its purpose is to reexamine tobacco, which has such diverse and complex aspects, from a cultural-historical perspective.
