The eighth installment of the "Field of Knowledge" series, "Protecting and Nurturing the Northernmost Forest," has been released.
"Fields of Knowledge" is a series that focuses on the vast research and education fields of Hokkaido's five universities and explores the cutting-edge knowledge that is being cultivated there.
The eighth installment, "Protecting and Nurturing the Northernmost Forest," introduces the Teshio Research Forest, Japan's northernmost university research forest, located in Horonobe Town, a five-hour drive north from the Sapporo campus. Established in 1912 (Taisho 1), the forest has been protecting and nurturing a diverse range of forests, from virgin forests to plantations, for over 110 years.
Professor Kentaro Takagi, head of the Teshio Research Forest Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere talks about the appeal of the Teshio Research Forest, saying, "Researchers are looking for different types of forests, so I think having a variety of forest types is a strength. The presence of technical staff and forestry technicians who can modify the forests is also important."
