Hokkaido University Museum will be exhibiting Hokkaido's only meteorite for a limited time from September 5th to November 3rd.
At 4:30 pm on September 4th, 1925, exactly 100 years ago, a meteorite fell in Koshu, Numakai Town (now Bibai City). It is the only meteorite confirmed to date in Hokkaido, and is registered as "Numakai" by the International Meteorological Society. It has also been designated a Bibai City cultural property as the "Koshu-nai meteorite."
The meteorite that appeared in the 172nd Naoki Prize-winning novel "The Sea That Inherits Indigo" (by Iyohara Arata) is based on this Numagai meteorite. It might be fun to think about the characters while looking at the meteorite. To mark the 100th anniversary of the encounter with the Numagai meteorite, we will be holding a limited exhibition of small pieces of the Numagai meteorite from our museum's collection as detailed below. Please come and see for yourself.
