The Nibutani Ainu Culture Museum in Biratori Town will hold its 31st special exhibition, "Memories of Nibutani - Life and Tourism," from September 17th to November 30th, in collaboration with the Hokkaido University Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies.
Nibutani was visited by many people during the tourism boom from 1955 to 1980. It was a tourist destination, but also a place where local people went about their daily lives. This exhibition uses photographs taken at the time to trace the appearance of Nibutani from the two themes of "tourism" and "landscape."
Additionally, on October 26th, a special exhibition lecture titled "Let's Talk About Nibutani Back Then" will be held. The lecture will be moderated by Professor Yamazaki Koji of the Hokkaido University Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies. The talk will be a free-flowing discussion looking back at Nibutani from the 1950s to the 1960s. In the second half of the event, participants will walk around the venue with photographs in hand, tracing the vestiges of Nibutani from that time.
