Hokkaido University Museum will hold the 6th Saturday Public Seminar of 2025, "Killing two birds with one stone: purifying mine wastewater and removing carbon dioxide," on September 20th.

Acid mine drainage from abandoned mines poses serious environmental risks. Meanwhile, atmospheric carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming, is also a pressing issue facing humanity. Both issues are considered negative legacies of industrial activities that have been carried out to enrich our lives. To ensure the sustainable development of humanity, they require cooperation and action from all actors, including governments, universities, businesses, and civil society. This presentation will introduce the nature of these two problems and introduce the latest research and on-site efforts on "basalt mine drainage purification and CO₂ removal technology," which simultaneously solves both issues. It will also share with the public the possibilities for the future.
