Hokkaido University Graduate School of Law will hold its 2025 Advanced Seminar, "Considering Inheritance Law: Developments and Challenges in Japanese Inheritance Law," on September 7th.

Hokkaido University Law School offers Advanced Seminars as a high-level recurrent education aimed at local practicing lawyers and legal professionals, as well as graduates and current students of the law school, to prepare them for cutting-edge practice in a wide range of legal fields.

Six years have passed since the 2018 Inheritance Law Revision came into effect. While new systems such as spousal residence rights, the right to claim for the amount of infringement of the legally reserved share, and the right to claim special contribution fees have become established, operational challenges have also emerged. This seminar will feature Noriko Mizuno, a longtime leader in research into family law and inheritance law who was also involved in the 2018 revision as a member of the Legislative Council's Civil Code (Inheritance) Subcommittee. She will provide an explanation of the current inheritance law and analyze the issues facing Japanese inheritance law and their background. This is a valuable opportunity to connect theory and practice for lawyers, judicial scriveners, administrative scriveners, and other legal professionals involved in inheritance practice. We hope you will join us.
