The Science Council of Japan's Part 2 Subcommittee on Gender Diversity in Life Sciences, Part 2 Subcommittee on Gender Equity of the Committee on Scientists, Part 1 Subcommittee on General Gender Equity of the Science Council of Japan, Part 3 Subcommittee on Gender Diversity in Science and Engineering, Part 3, will be co-hosting an open symposium entitled "Considering Diversity in Science - Choosing a Career Path that is Right for You" on October 4th, with the Hokkaido University Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and the Waseda University Nano & Life Innovation Research Organization Institute for Normative Science.
Scientific thinking is a universal foundation common to all academic fields, including not only life sciences and engineering, but also the humanities and social sciences. In recent years, interdisciplinary fields such as data science and digital humanities have rapidly expanded. Free thinking based on diverse perspectives and experiences that go beyond the traditional framework of "science and humanities" is the driving force behind next-generation innovative research and technological development. However, at the same time, "gender stereotypes and unconscious biases" affect career choices and development, and the situation in which talented people are unable to fully demonstrate their abilities is becoming a serious issue.
This symposium aims to build an inclusive and sustainable research and education environment in the field of science by examining the reality and impact of such unconscious bias from multiple angles and sharing the latest trends in gender diversity strategies and career support measures being promoted by universities, research institutions, and companies. We hope that this symposium will help each participant realize that "academic diversity is supported by individual diversity" and provide an opportunity for them to envision positive career paths for the future.
