Center for Natural Hazards Research and Kushiro City have signed a collaboration agreement to work toward reducing damage from wide-area complex disasters. The signing ceremony for this collaboration agreement was held at the Hokkaido University Conference Hall on May 27th.

A massive earthquake along the Japan Trench and the Kuril Trench, one of the biggest threats to Hokkaido, is expected to cause enormous damage, especially along the Pacific coast, and Kushiro City is expected to suffer the greatest tsunami in the prefecture. Hokkaido University's Center for Natural Hazards Research and Kushiro City have recently signed a partnership agreement to work together to promote efforts to prevent and mitigate wide-area complex disasters caused by such massive earthquakes, as well as to foster human resources with specialized knowledge, with the aim of reducing damage in the event of a large-scale disaster.
