Hokkaido University Museum will hold the 3rd Saturday Public Seminar of 2025, "Paleontological Research in Hokkaido - Focusing on Aquatic Mammal Fossils" on June 14th.
The third speaker will be Professor Yoshihiro Tanaka, curator at the Sapporo City Museum Activity Center and researcher at Hokkaido University Museum Archives Department. Hokkaido is home to not only dinosaurs, but also fascinating fossils such as Naumann's elephant and ammonite. This time, the speaker will focus on aquatic mammals (whales, dolphins, walruses, etc.), which are his specialty, and introduce the recent progress and future prospects of paleontological diversity, evolution, and extinction that are becoming clear from fossil research. He will also introduce research on whale fossils found in Sapporo, research on Tobetsu red pine walruses at Hokkaido University Museum, and the curators themselves who conduct research at museums. I've heard of a curator, but what kind of work do they do? This is recommended for those who have been interested in the subject even once.
