The Hokkaido University Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies will hold a lecture entitled "Reconnecting Ainu Customs Photographs to History" on June 17th.

Since the end of the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration, Ainu people have been photographed by many photographers, and the resulting photographs have been consumed by outsiders, including Japanese people, sometimes as anthropological "specimens" and sometimes as "rare" souvenirs from Hokkaido. In this lecture, the author of "Photographs tell the story of the Ainu's modernity: Between 'showing' and 'being seen'" (Shinsensha) will talk about his attempt to reexamine such photographs from a completely different angle and depict the progress of the Ainu in modern times.
