Hokkaido University Museum will hold the second Saturday Citizen Seminar of 2025, "Exploring the Health and Society of Ancient Hokkaido People through Paleopathology," on May 10th.
The second speaker will be Professor Daisuke Kubo of the Hokkaido University Museum. When observing human bones excavated from archaeological sites, lesions and abnormalities can be found. Although it is not common, damage reminiscent of trauma can also be found. Paleopathology begins with a qualitative or quantitative understanding of these traces, and then explores the causes and backgrounds. Sometimes the goal is to diagnose illness in specific individuals, but we also look at socio-cultural factors such as nutritional status, physical movements associated with work, and inter-individual violence. In this seminar, we will summarize the knowledge gained from paleopathological research to date, consider the health and society of ancient people who lived in Hokkaido, and present the outlook for future research.
