Hokkaido University established the Green Transformation (GX) Leading Research Center in April 2025 with the aim of forming a "GX knowledge hub" at the university, which has strengths in the SDGs.

 

Hokkaido is the number one prefecture in Japan, and is making the most of its renewable energy potential to promote both the accumulation of GX industries and the strengthening and accumulation of financial functions that support them. Hokkaido University has established this center with the aim of becoming a cluster of GX industries in order to contribute to Hokkaido's GX industries and regional revitalization. The center will accelerate outstanding interdisciplinary research by a variety of GX researchers on campus, promote GX through collaboration with local governments, industries, financial institutions, etc. both within and outside the prefecture, and
Not only will we contribute to regional revitalization, but we will also disseminate the results from Hokkaido to the world.

 

A kick-off symposium was held on May 27th to commemorate the establishment of the Center. Director Hiroki Habasaki introduced the Center's activity plan, and also introduced initiatives related to the GX Finance and Asset Management Special Zone in Hokkaido and Sapporo, as well as research by GX-related researchers at Hokkaido University.
