On April 1, 2025, Hokkaido University established the Semiconductor Frontier Education and Research Organization, which will serve as the headquarters for promoting semiconductor education and research.

By formulating university-wide policies related to semiconductors, effectively integrating on-campus education and research resources, strengthening collaboration with external institutions, and promoting the development and operation of education and research infrastructure, we aim to strengthen education and research functions, thereby contributing to the sustainable securing of human resources, the advancement of research and development, the promotion of industrial policy, and the revitalization of the local community in Japan and the Hokkaido region.

We will be carrying out the following activities while dispatching practitioners from semiconductor-related companies as instructors, collaborating in research and development, and collaborating with top universities in the semiconductor field both in Japan and overseas.

  • Strengthening semiconductor education functions
By utilizing cutting-edge semiconductors and our university's strengths in AI, data science, and field science, we will promote the development of human resources who can "make" semiconductors and "use" semiconductors.
  • Strengthening semiconductor research capabilities
In addition to research that contributes to semiconductor development, we will promote research aimed at developing new uses for semiconductors (developing new use cases), thereby contributing to solving problems in semiconductor manufacturing and creating new uses for semiconductors, thereby creating new industries and building economic and social systems.
  • Development and operation of the "Semiconductor Prototyping Lab"
As a place to put education and research into practice, we will establish a "Semiconductor Prototyping Lab" equipped with a series of devices related to design, pre-processing, post-processing, and evaluation, and will accelerate the development and production of highly skilled human resources in the semiconductor field and the social implementation of research results.
