Hokkaido University's Faculty of Humanities and Human Sciences will update its special exhibition at Shoka-no-Mori with "Tracing the 43rd Parallel: Emotions in Immigrant Neighborhoods in the Multicultural City of Toronto" from March 21st to May 30th.

This exhibition introduces the realities of multicultural cities and immigrants based on a collection of photographs taken by Associate Professor Takahashi Kouki (Regional Science Laboratory) during his fieldwork in immigrant neighborhoods in Toronto, Canada, over a period of more than 10 years. The exhibition was planned by students from the Regional Science Laboratory under the supervision of Associate Professor Takahashi.

This photo exhibition is about immigrant neighborhoods in Toronto, Canada, a city located on the 43rd parallel north, just like Sapporo. According to the British public broadcaster BBC, Toronto is said to be the most multicultural city in the world, with immigrants making up roughly one in two of the total population, and people from more than 200 ethnic groups living together in the city. Reflecting the diverse population, there are said to be more than 10 immigrant neighborhoods in Toronto. We hope that by following the 43rd parallel north from Sapporo, you will be able to experience the bustle of the city of Toronto and the lives of its people with diverse cultural backgrounds.
