The Hokkaido University Graduate Faculty of Humanities and Human Sciences Applied Ethics and Philosophy Research and Education Center will hold the 40th Applied Ethics and Philosophy Symposium, "Japanese Citizens' Attitudes Towards Human Brain Organoid Research," on March 26th.

In recent years, the importance of incorporating a social perspective into scientific and technological research and development has been emphasized. Similar points have been made about human brain organoid research, which creates three-dimensional neural tissue from human stem cells, but there have been few surveys of actual public attitudes. In this presentation, we will introduce part of the survey we conducted at the end of 2022 among Japanese people on their attitudes toward human brain organoid research and consider the implications for ethics. The issues that respondents considered morally important differ in many ways from the views of ethicists, and existing ethical discussions may not be able to respond effectively to social concerns.
