The Hokkaido University School of Agriculture, Graduate School of Agriculture, and Research Faculty of Agriculture will hold the 70th Clock Tower Salon, "Ask School of Agriculture" on October 23rd.
The theme of the 70th session is "Let's ask an insect expert: The history of School of Agriculture and insects." The Laboratory of Insect Systematics at Hokkaido University's School of Agriculture was founded by Matsumura Matsutoshi in 1895 and has been passed down for over 100 years since the days of Sapporo Agricultural College. It is one of the laboratories with the longest history in the Faculty of School of Agriculture. The name of the laboratory, "(insect) systematics," is a field that names living things and groups them together in a way that reflects their evolution, creating a system. In other words, insect systematics, which is the "foundation" of all fields that deal with living things, has a long history in School of Agriculture. When you hear about insect research at the Faculty of School of Agriculture, many people probably imagine that it is research on pest control. Insects have been attracting attention recently due to the outbreak of stink bugs and bedbugs, but what kind of basic research on insects is being conducted at School of Agriculture? We will introduce it to you.
