Hokkaido University's Faculty of Humanities and Human Sciences will hold the 17th Plus One Piece Reading Group: "The World of Olga Tokarczuk" on October 24th.
Olga Tokarczuk is a Polish novelist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2018. Professor Aya Ogura has translated her major works and has had contact with the author herself. In this Plus 1 Piece reading group, she will talk about the appeal and characteristics of Tokarczuk's literature from the perspective of a translator. She emerged after the regime change in 1989, attracted attention as a flag-bearer of a new generation of writers, and was said to have "brought people who only read newspapers back to literature." How are her works positioned in Polish literature? She will also share some episodes about how she encountered her works and what inspired her to translate them. She will also talk about the activity of "literary translation," the process, the difficulties and ingenuity involved in translating, the rewards of the job, and episodes unique to translating Tokarczuk's works.
