Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido University will hold the 2024 Institute of Low Temperature Science Joint Research Conference, "The Next 10-Year Plan for Sea Ice (Drift Ice) Observation Research in the Sea of Okhotsk Using the Icebreaker Patrol Vessel Soya," on October 22nd.
Since 1996, Institute of Low Temperature Science Hokkaido University, has been conducting joint research with the Japan Coast Guard's First Regional District, and has been observing the winter sea ice area of the southern Sea of Okhotsk using the icebreaker patrol vessel "Souya" for over a quarter century. Many researchers in Japan have taken advantage of this opportunity to achieve many results, including ocean physics and biogeochemistry related to sea ice, and the impact of seasonal sea ice on climate. Furthermore, research using "Souya" observations has led to many studies in the Antarctic and Arctic polar regions. In 2025, "Souya" observations will mark 30 years since their launch. In this workshop, those who have used "Souya" observations will gather together to discuss "how to maintain and develop "Souya" observations in the future and utilize them in next-generation research," and to discuss seasonal sea ice science that can be developed using "Souya" observations in the next 10-year scale.
