The Hokkaido Faculty of Humanities and Human Sciences, Center for Applied Ethics and Philosophy Research and Education will hold a public symposium entitled "Transgender and Medicine" on October 12th.
Transgender, which has traditionally been considered a gender identity "disorder," is now seen as one of many different ways of being sexual. In October 2023, the Gender Identity Disorder Special Cases Act was ruled unconstitutional, invalidating the "sterilization requirement" for changing gender registration. In July of this year, the Hiroshima High Court effectively allowed gender change without surgery. However, the current situation in which trans people are discriminated against remains unchanged, and the various issues surrounding trans people have not been resolved. In this symposium, we would like to consider "transgender bodies" by focusing on "medical care," particularly sterilization requirements and reproductive medicine.
